No Smoking - Union Health Minister said to Shahrukh and Amitabh..

Union Health Minister - Anbumani Ramadoss

Concerned over the impression they leave on youngsters when they smoke on silver screen, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has urged Bollywood mega stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to desist from smoking in their films.

Amitabh

"The movies are most responsible (for encouraging smoking). When I said movies should not have smoking scenes we have statistics which show that 52 per cent of children have their first puff of a cigarette because of movie celebrities," he said.

"I have already made appeals to Shah Rukh Khan. I would like to make an appeal to him and Amitabh Bachchan and all other personalities," Ramadoss said in an interview to Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN’s Devil’s Advocate programme. He was also critical of Khan for smoking at a cricket match.

Questioned on his pet theme of pictorial warnings on cigarette and bidi packets, he said, "I am sure they would be very effective. All this time we have been saying things to people. But I believe it is now time to scare them. In contrast to developed countries where tobacco incidence is going down, in India, it is going up frighteningly".

Confronted with the fact that the government had agreed to pictorial warnings 18 months ago but was yet to implement it, Ramadoss said the delay was due to ‘political activity and the judiciary’.

However, the government’s intention was to enforce pictorial warnings and there were no two ways on that, he added.

Having just bagged the bid for the Kolkata team, actor Shah Rukh Khan said he would like to see former India captain Sourav Ganguly leading the outfit in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Shah Rukh, along with fellow actor Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, won the bid for the Kolkata team for a whopping USD 75.09 million and said he would seek suggestions of experts before putting together a winning combination.

“I have already decided on the entertainment part but we have not decided on the core and content of the team. We want to put together a winning combination, for which I would definitely seek advice of the experts. I don’t have anyone in mind right now but we would seek expert view on that,” he told a TV channel.

And the Prince of Kolkata would be the obvious choice for leading the side, he said.

“I hope Ganguly leads my team,” he said.

Dwelling on the venture, the actor said, “It’s not about money. The idea is to nurture youngsters and give them more platform for playing cricket. I have a huge passion for game and I want to be part of every sport. I guess I would have to make more films to ensure we can run the team”.

Preity Zinta too sounded excited about owning the Mohali team which costs her and her boyfriend Ness Wadia USD 76 million.

“All I want to say is that it was fantastic and a great opportunity. And I’m happy that we won the bid,” she said.

Wadia too shared her excitement and said, “We are happy to have a role to promote cricket. Please do come to see the team play.”

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya said though he lost the Mumbai team to Mukesh Ambani but was happy to win the bid for the Bangalore team, which costs him a staggering USD 111.6 million.

“I was under-bidder for Mumbai but I’m happy I won the Bangalore team,” he said.

Sunday - Movie Review..

January 25, 08 by WeBollywood

Sunday - The Movie
SundayTheMovie

If watching 1980s movies in which there is a damsel in distress, a hero who single-handedly beats up numerous thugs and where cars fly into the air for no particular reason, is your thing, make a beeline for Rohit Shetty’s Sunday. If not, save yourself some grief and don’t ruin your weekend..

One of the hallmarks of a good story spinner is one who can keep multiple tracks going, colliding ever so lightly, enough to keep the viewers interest piqued but not making connections too obvious. In a suspense story where it is always necessary to strew red herrings, this becomes almost mandatory.

Sunday attempts to be a suspense film and so when Sehar (Ayesha Takia), a dubbing artiste, wakes up one Monday morning thinking it is Sunday, she gradually realises she has lost one day.

Sunday-Ayesha
Sunday-TheMovie

So far so good. But when a cab driver Ballu (Arshad Warsi) keeps asking her for Rs 420 for a ride she doesn’t remember taking and an aspiring actor Kumar (Irrfan Khan) keeps calling her a ghost, it becomes obvious that she encountered them during her missing time.

To make it even more heavy handed she is constantly being fired at or held at knife point by a group of long haired maniacs. She, of course, is the damsel in distress.

Her hero appears as the bribe taking cop Rajveer (Ajay Devgan) who bashes up the thugs, chases a drug dealer across the terraces of Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, and discards all the herrings to solve the mystery of the missing day as well as two murders that have happened that night. On the way to finding the link, there is a car chase and several sundry vehicles are blown up.

Sunday - Arshad
Sunday-ArshadWarsi

But then Sunday also purports to be a comedy and so the screen is filled with all actors upto all kinds of buffoonery when they are not in suspense mode.

And so Kumar runs around as Dracula sometimes, as Raavan with 10 heads and Ballu makes fools of the foreign tourists who hire his fire engine red ambassador cab.

Sunday - Esha
Sunday-EshaDeol

Someone or the other is perennially slapping someone else in the name of comedy.
Shetty’s last film Golmaal was a huge hit, which probably accounts for the profusion of talented actors like Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan showing up in Sunday even though their roles are anything but worthy of their presence.

Sunday
ArshadAyeshaAjayIrfan-Sunday

In fact the whole film stinks of a let’s-make-hay-while-the-sun-shines attitude, never the right reason to do anything creative.

Happy Republic Day, Bollywood Stars Interview..

January 25, 08 by WeBollywood

Bollywood personalities Preity Zinta, J.P. Dutta and television actor Rajiv Khandelwal, who have army connections, say the Republic Day is very special to them. Others, however, feel that after 60 years of independence the country should bring in some changes.

Preity Zinta - Republic Day
PreityZinta-RepublicDay

Preity Zinta: My dad was in the army and now my brother Dipankar is in the army. So I grew up in an atmosphere of soldierly pride. One of the perks of being an army child was that I got to do a Bharat Darshan early in my life. Every two years my father would get transferred, and we’d be in a different place. It was a great learning experience. The army is very close to my heart. Recently, when I was invited by NDTV to visit the soldiers on the border, I had a ball re-living my army life. Republic Day is very special to us. I still remember attending those early-morning parades in the chilly winter of Delhi. The day reminds us of how much we’ve achieved and how much we still need to do.

JP Dutta - Republic Day
JPDutta-RepublicDay

J.P. Dutta: My brother Deepak, who died on duty, was a squadron leader in the air force. In fact, my very first film ’Sarhad’ starring Vinod Khanna, which was not released, was a tribute to my brother. Since then subconsciously or consciously, my war films ’Border’ and ’LOC’ have been dedicated to my brother’s memory. Not a day goes by when we don’t think about him. I feel today’s generation isn’t motivated enough to join the army and the air force. Films such as mine and earlier the ones by Chetan Anand addressed themselves to the life of the soldiers and the futility of war. But these are themes that no longer attract young people. Sad.

Lara Dutta - Republic Day
LaraDutta-RepublicDay

Lara Dutta: Both my dad and my sister are in the air force. They’ve both led their respective contingents for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. January 26 is therefore really special for the entire family. My father leads the three helicopters that fly overhead and shower rose petals. And my sister is the parade commander. I’ve wonderful memories of childhood when I’d get up before dawn to make it to the parade.

Rajeev Khandelwal - Republic Day
RajeevKhandelwal-RepublicDay

Rajiv Khandelwal: My father was in the army. And my elder brother Col. Sanjeev is currently serving in the army. I was always tempted to be a part of the army. But since my brother had already joined the armed services, I was inclined to go ahead with my other passion, acting. I’d love to do a film about the army. I enjoyed playing Capt Rajveer in ’Left Right Left’. I wonder why the army isn’t a sought-after vocation among youngsters today. Is the army losing its sheen or does patriotism no longer have buyers? I feel every student in college should be made to go through a stint in the army.

Bikram Saluja - Republic Day
BikramSaluja-RepublicDay

Bikram Saluja: My mother’s brother was in the army. I’d have loved to follow my mama (uncle) into the army. But from as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a tennis player. Instead I ended up as a model then an actor. In J.P. Dutta’s ’LOC’, I got a chance to play a soldier. It made me wonder what life would’ve been like if I had followed by uncle’s dream.

Shabana Azmi: As a child, I remember being bundled into trucks on Republic Day to see the lights at Chowpatty. It was only later that I understood how wonderful our constitution was. Republic Day should become our definitive national festival so that every Indian irrespective of religion can celebrate it. This Republic Day, I hope and pray that a fair and just rehabilitation policy is put in place for those displaced because of development projects or environmental disasters.

Himesh - Republic Day
Himesh-RepublicDay

Himesh Reshammiya: Republic Day makes me realise the value of my freedom. We’re truly blessed to live in an independent democratic country where everyone has the right to say and do what he likes. On this day, we genuinely need to pay tributes to every person who has contributed to independent India. I dream of India becoming the richest country in the world and that there is not a single citizen living without food, shelter and clothing. Insha Allah, it will happen. That day isn’t far off.

Mahesh Bhatt - Republic Day
MaheshBhatt-RepublicDay

Mahesh Bhatt: There’s a magical childhood memory of a time when the city would glitter with lights. My one dream is for the nation to show zero tolerance for female infanticide.

Alisha Chinoy - Republic Day
AlishaChinoy-RepublicDay

Alisha Chinai: Freedom comes with responsibility. My vision of a new India begins with the eradication of corruption, poverty and with population control. With a nation of over a billion people, we need a benevolent dictator at the helm! On a personal note this Republic Day, I want to make India a better place for singers by closing down all music companies that rip off artistes’ royalties.

Madhuri Dixit Nominated for Padma Shri Awardees this year..

January 25, 08 by WeBollywood

Madhuri - Padam-Shree
MadhuriDixit-Padam-Shree

Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, who won many hearts with her million-dollar-smile and returned to the silver screen with ’Aaja Nachle’ after a five-year hiatus last year, has been named among the Padma Shri awardees this year.

The ravishing actress has several hits to her credit, including ’Tezaab’, ’Dil’ ’Dil To Pagal Hain’ and ’Devdas’.

Though her comeback film, after marriage to a US-based doctor and two kids, proved to be a dud at the box office, Madhuri remained unfazed.

’I have never been a part of number game and we are not the racing horses who should be numbered. Either the work you do is good or bad. I have come back not because I miss the media archlights or being written about… it’s secondary. I missed my craft!’ she was quoted as saying.

Madhuri forayed into filmdom with ’Abodh’ in 1986 and was catapulted to fame with the hit dance number ’Ek Do Teen’ in ’Tezaab’ (1988).

There was no looking back for Madhuri who went on to give a string of hits like ’Dayavan’ and ’Ram Lakhan’. She bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in ’Dil’, in which she starred opposite Aamir Khan. She once again walked away with the coveted award for her role in ’Beta’.

Madhuri’s electrifying dance number ’Choli ke peechche..’ in ’Khalnayak’ proved a huge hit and her fan following simply soared.

She repeated the success story in Bollywood blockbuster ’Hum Aapke Hain Koun!’, where she shared screen space with Salman Khan and bagged yet another Filmfare.

Her powerful performance in mega hit ’Dil To Pagal Hai’ won her a fourth best actress award.

The dancing diva also charmed renowned Indian painter M.F. Hussain, who cast her in his film ’Gaja Gamini’.

In 2001, Madhuri was awarded the National Citizens Award, which recognises excellence in various activities affecting national life. The very next year she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s mega-budget ’Devdas’ with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Not only did her acting earn rave reviews, she also bagged a Filmfare Award for best supporting actress.
