Sunday - Movie Review..

January 25, 08 by WeBollywood

Sunday - The Movie
SundayTheMovie

If watching 1980s movies in which there is a damsel in distress, a hero who single-handedly beats up numerous thugs and where cars fly into the air for no particular reason, is your thing, make a beeline for Rohit Shetty’s Sunday. If not, save yourself some grief and don’t ruin your weekend..

One of the hallmarks of a good story spinner is one who can keep multiple tracks going, colliding ever so lightly, enough to keep the viewers interest piqued but not making connections too obvious. In a suspense story where it is always necessary to strew red herrings, this becomes almost mandatory.

Sunday attempts to be a suspense film and so when Sehar (Ayesha Takia), a dubbing artiste, wakes up one Monday morning thinking it is Sunday, she gradually realises she has lost one day.

Sunday-Ayesha
Sunday-TheMovie

So far so good. But when a cab driver Ballu (Arshad Warsi) keeps asking her for Rs 420 for a ride she doesn’t remember taking and an aspiring actor Kumar (Irrfan Khan) keeps calling her a ghost, it becomes obvious that she encountered them during her missing time.

To make it even more heavy handed she is constantly being fired at or held at knife point by a group of long haired maniacs. She, of course, is the damsel in distress.

Her hero appears as the bribe taking cop Rajveer (Ajay Devgan) who bashes up the thugs, chases a drug dealer across the terraces of Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, and discards all the herrings to solve the mystery of the missing day as well as two murders that have happened that night. On the way to finding the link, there is a car chase and several sundry vehicles are blown up.

Sunday - Arshad
Sunday-ArshadWarsi

But then Sunday also purports to be a comedy and so the screen is filled with all actors upto all kinds of buffoonery when they are not in suspense mode.

And so Kumar runs around as Dracula sometimes, as Raavan with 10 heads and Ballu makes fools of the foreign tourists who hire his fire engine red ambassador cab.

Sunday - Esha
Sunday-EshaDeol

Someone or the other is perennially slapping someone else in the name of comedy.
Shetty’s last film Golmaal was a huge hit, which probably accounts for the profusion of talented actors like Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan showing up in Sunday even though their roles are anything but worthy of their presence.

ArshadAyeshaAjayIrfan-Sunday

In fact the whole film stinks of a let’s-make-hay-while-the-sun-shines attitude, never the right reason to do anything creative.

Harsh Chhaya to play gay in ‘Fashion’

January 21, 08 by WeBollywood

Harsha Chhaya - Fashion
HarshaChhaya-Fashion

Harsh Chhaya, who was seen in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate, will play a gay fashion designer in his next movie titled Fashion.

Harsh, known to experiment with all types of roles, plays a gay for the first time. It will be completely new from what his fans have seen him doing so far.

Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut are playing the female leads in the movie, which will delve behind the scenes of the flourishing fashion industry. Bhandarkar is co-producing it with UTV.

Interestingly, Harsh was not the first choice for the role as he was considered an actor with too serious an image. However, he was keen on the role and made an effort to get it.

’I just told Madhur to watch it for me, it did not matter if he cast me at the end of it,’ Harsh said.

Apparently, Harsh bought a wig, clothes that he thought would be appropriate for a certain look, wore make up, plucked his eyebrows in shape and then shot himself on a video camera. He edited the five-minute piece and presented the DVD along with some stills to Bhandarkar. In a couple of days, the role was his!

’I put in an effort to get a certain part and I would sincerely like to thank Madhur for casting me finally.

’There are very few opportunities like this available to an actor in the span of his career. I saw one here and I had to at least try to grab it for my own sake,’ he said.

Character Sketches

Ayesha Takia as Seher

Ajay - Sunday
Ajay - Sunday

Arshad Warsi as Ballu
His red Ambassador taxi is just like him - bright, optimistic and full of beans. He has no hassles about stuffing too many tourists into his taxi or giving a lift to a strange, giggling girl in the middle of the night. What does bug him is when the girl disappears without paying him his fare.

Arshad - Sunday
Arshad - Sunday

Irrfan Khan as Kumar
Kumar is Ballu’s bum chum and budding actor. He can play lawyer, Ravan, Dracula, don at the drop of a hat. But when he meets a girl who claims she’s a dead woman, he drops all his acts and scoots like hell.

Irfan - Sunday
Irfan - Sunday

Storyline

A dead body found floating in a lake… Unexplained scratch marks on her neck… Supari killers out to kill her… A taxi driver who yells ‘bhoot, bhoot’ every time he sees her.

Seher is at first amused, then mystified and then terrified when she realizes she has a connection with all these totally unconnected incidents. But she cannot remember anything.

Seher’s fiancé Rajvir Randhava is convinced that she is innocent, but he is also equally sure that she is linked to everything. But she cannot remember a goddamn thing.

Then another dead body is found. And the bracelet found near the dead body belongs to Seher. The evidence is mounting and all fingers point towards Seher. And still, she cannot remember a darn thing.

Is Seher really as innocent as she claims to be? Is she a dubbing artiste by day and a serial killer by night? Is her bubbling charm but a mask that hides her darker and menacing self?

As Sehar desperately fights the fog that clouds her treacherous memory, ACP Rajvir has to fight the fact that the woman he wants to marry may well be a murderer and worse.

What if one day went missing from your life?

‘Sunday’ also features cameo appearances by Esha Deol and Tusshar Kapoor .

The movie has six songs (apart from remixes), each one composed by a different composer. Of all the numbers, Sandeep Chowta’s title song “Missing Sunday” is the best.

Produced by Kumar Mangat and Sunil Lulla, ‘Sunday’ has been shot in India and Australia. The film is directed by Rohit Shetty.

‘Sunday’ is slated to release on January 25, 2008.

Hallo Bol Gets Mixed Response At The Box Office

January 18, 08 by WeBollywood

Halla Bol

Rajkumar Santoshi’s political commentary Halla Bol has received a mixed response in its opening week. While the audiences in the western circuit have rejected the movie, it is doing reasonably well in some pockets in north India.

Box office collections in Mumbai started dropping from the second show of its opening day last Friday (Jan 11). The movie notched a lacklustre Mumbai territory opening with 70 percent collections, considered unusual for an Ajay Devgan starrer.

Halla Bol2

Bollywood trade circles were taken by surprise when the collections in cinemas in Mumbai dropped to as low as 42 percent after the opening day.

The box office graph tilted downwards in all major suburban circuits.

The verdict is now clear. Though appreciated critically, Halla Bol is the first debacle of 2008.

But the movie has been doing reasonably well in some pockets in north India. A leading Mumbai distributor attributes this moderate success to the political culture of the north.

“It was expected. The political undertone explicit in the movie is akin to the political culture of the North. Cine-goers in the north generally like movies that have a fair amount of action. ’Haala Bol’ has it in ample measure. The action scenes in the movie, as in all Raj Kumar Santoshi movies, are nicely executed to boost the narration. Maybe, audience in other centres squirmed at the movie’s political content,” a leading Mumbai distributor, not wishing to be named.

Halla Bol4

A group of young girls who watched the movie at the Fame-Andheri in Mumbai summed up the mood of the audience when they told that in Halla Bol, director Rajkumar Santoshi assumed the role of a teacher, telling them what they should do and what they should not.

“Come on, we do not like to be talked to in such a silly manner,” said Sangita Sajlani, the most vociferous among them.

Halla Bol5

The debacle of Halla Bol is also a major setback to Pyramid Symira. It was the theatre chain’s first foray into the Hindi belt. It is too shell-shocked to comment on the film’s poor show all over.

Though reports from overseas market are yet to be made public, trade circles believe that the movie may not fare well there either.

The verdict that the movie has received in the domestic market has set the overseas distributors wondering whether the NRI audience will be able to identify themselves with the Indian social milieu into which the issue has been woven.
